8 Reasons Spencer Hastings Totally Has An Identical Twin on ‘Pretty Little Liars’

The latest and greatest news in the world of Pretty Little Liars is the bomb Marlene King dropped a few weeks ago — namely that one of the characters on the hit Freeform series has a twin! And that’s not all: After revealing this major secret, Marlene pointed out that fans will meet this individual before the end of Season 6B. Who’s excited? Oh, you better believe we’re so ready to find out who has a look-alike lurking around Rosewood!

And naturally, this wouldn’t be PLL without fans flocking to social media to share their most intricate theories on the latest mystery. The top culprit on everyone’s list? Spencer Hastings, and here are eight reasons why:

1.) The random disappearances.

What better way to explain her disappearance the night Alison went missing. She thinks she heard a noise. Psshhh, her twin could have easily changed clothes and taken on Spencer’s identity.

2.) The bangs.

We all know that the Liars grew up, found new jobs, love interests and hair styles. But seriously, Spencer’s bangs are something else (and we mean this in every good way possible). But still, we can’t help but wonder if this supposed makeover is just another lady’s hairstyle preference….

3.) Hastings Family Secrets.

You know what they say: Never turn your back on Hastings. Peter, Veronica and Melissa always have tons of them hidden in that skeleton-filled gazebos of theirs that’s (figuratively) littered with rat poison and Black Swan feathers. And what better time for this earth-shattering one to leak than during Veronica’s campaign….Seriously.

4.) That “brief” stay in Radley.

Spencer seemed to recover rather quickly from her check-in at Radley Sanitarium. Could her twin have been the one who signed in the day Toby supposedly died?

5.)  Speaking of Toby.

Spencer Hastings was the one who disliked Toby Cavanaugh the most. She kept warning her friends to keep their distance from him, that he was bad news. Then, all of a sudde — soon after their French study session and a game of Scrabble — she experienced a change of heart, and the rest is Spoby history.

And let’s not even start with the slight betrayal of girl code….aka hooking up with her friend’s ex/first love.

Yes, Spencer has smooched two of her sister’s beaus, but she’s never gone after her friends’ love interests. And if she is indeed the one with a twin, it wouldn’t be awkward for Hanna and Caleb to be endgame.

6.) The ruffled dress in the PLL promo.

Does it look familiar?

That’s because Troian (as Spencer) is wearing it in the PLL poster below. True, this could just be a case of a body double rocking the same outfit; then again, it could be a purposeful clue.

Whoa there! Is anyone getting major The Orphan vibes right now? Granted, she’s not wearing the same clothes as Spencer in the scene — and probably wouldn’t be hanging out in the Hastings living room all willy nilly — but sometimes you just have to let your imagination run wild.

7.) “I hide in plain sight.”

According this Reddit user, Spencer has said this not just once but twice. Coincidence? Maybe. But we can’t help but hope that it’s basically a dead giveaway that someone is roaming around Rosewood, masquerading as our favorite chic geek.

8. And who could forget this precious mother-daughter moment from PLL episode 4×23?
“It was as if there were two of you living in this house: the Spencer we recognized and your evil twin, and we never knew which one was coming down to breakfast.”

Back then, Veronica shared this eerie anecdote about erratic behavior to help explain why she and Peter thought Spencer had killed Alison. Moreover, back then we simply figured Veronica was referring to Spencer’s drug abuse and that Spencer’s memory loss was directly linked to her pill addiction. But to forget an entire summer? Knowing what we know now (which isn’t a whole lot, but it helps to know a twin is in the mix), it seems unlikely this would be the case.

Some more food for thought: Why has blood been such a MAJOR component in all of A’s threats to Spencer. During her Oxford University interview, a random blood vial burst in her handbag and hemorrhaged all over the dean’s chair. In the dollhouse, she woke up with blood smeared all over her shirt. Was this a mere scare tactic or was her tormentor trying to tell her something important about her family’s dark past? This is obviously not a fact — and we’re quite possibly reaching here — but it doesn’t hurt to think about this interesting PLL motif.

On that note, what do you think? Is Spencer the one with a twin or you placing bets on someone else? Lucas? Mrs. DiLaurentis? Aria Montgomery? Feel free to share your top theory in a comment below!

So it’s a show? “It’s a lifestyle.” The Gilmore Girls may have said this, but it’s Jaymie’s motto. She drinks too much coffee and watches way too much TV. Pretty Little Liars is an obsession. All things considered, Jaymie loves quoting Spencer Hastings, writing and pie — but she doesn’t want to date pie. Follow her PLL obsessions at @AllThingsPLL.
